Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about the Year 9 managed laptop programme.
Why is this change being made?
The school is moving to a managed laptop model to support safeguarding, security and learning. The current bring-your-own-device model does not give the school enough control to apply consistent monitoring, filtering, software and security settings to student-owned devices.
Does this apply to Year 10 and Year 11?
The programme is being rolled out year by year. For 2026/2027, it applies to Year 9. In later years it will continue to roll forward so that more year groups are covered.
What if I do not buy a laptop?
Only school-managed laptops will be allowed for Year 9 classroom use. A limited number of school devices may be available outside exam periods, but availability cannot be guaranteed.
Can I buy a MacBook?
No. This scheme requires a Windows laptop.
Can I keep administrator access during holidays?
No. Administrator access cannot be provided while the laptop is school-managed.
Can filtering and monitoring be turned off at home?
No. Filtering and monitoring remain active while the laptop is managed by the school.
Will school management affect my home network?
No. School management applies to the laptop, not to the home network. It will not change your router, Wi-Fi settings or other household devices.
Can the school see other devices at home?
No. School tools installed on the laptop do not scan or access other devices on the home network.
Can parents add personal software?
No, not while the device is school-managed. Only approved software can be installed.
Can another family member use the laptop?
Only school-issued accounts can be used while the laptop is school-managed. Personal or non-school accounts cannot be added.
What if the laptop is broken or stolen?
Parents remain responsible for hardware care, repair, loss and theft. The school may investigate where appropriate and can support with software setup once the device is repaired or replaced.
What if the stylus is lost?
Parents are responsible for replacing lost or damaged stylus pens.
Will the device work abroad?
Yes, provided it has an internet connection. School services and safeguarding tools should continue to work when the laptop is used abroad.
Who sees safeguarding alerts?
Safeguarding alerts are seen by the Designated Safeguarding Leaders and authorised safeguarding staff. The IT team does not review safeguarding content unless asked to support a safeguarding concern.
